Specific crystal formations bring their own metaphysical properties to enhance their power and effectiveness and facilitate their healing process.
Still others have attributes to assist in the seeking of information and solutions. Using the appropriate crystals can greatly enhance the outcome of your task.
Here are a list of only some of the basic types to help inform you of the different configurations and their basic qualities and abilities.
Barnacle Crystal
A Barnacle crystal has areas that are covered with smaller crystals. The larger crystal is considered to be a "wise one" and have a nurturing energy which attracts smaller crystals. Try a barnacle crystal when seeking solutions to family or group problems.
Bridge Crystal
A crystal with a smaller crystal which penetrates the larger crystal. It helps with "bridging" between the inner and outer worlds and between the self and others. Use it to communicate better and in meditation to bridge between self and higher planes.
Crystal Sphere
A crystal ball, sphere (often used for scrying) will emit a harmonious, gentle energy for the benefit of anyone within its auric field.
Channeling Crystal
A crystal with a seven sided face with a smaller triangular face on the opposite side of the point. It is used by the seeker of information. Use it in meditation to gain answers to specific questions or connect to higher wisdom.
The channeling crystal provides for a means of channeling and expressing truth and wisdom from both the inner realms of perfection and other worlds. It is symbolic of the student, the professor, the mystic and the seeker of wisdom. The channeling crystals can be used to access the wisdom from "within and without". They can be used to bring forth light and love from the most truthful and knowledgeable portions of the self. Sometimes there can be an encounter with other entities from whom one can learn; always check the information, given by the entity, with the personal inner knowing."
This crystal facilitates a connection between both our conscious mind and innate wisdom, as well as other planes of existence. The benefits of such an opportunity would be hard to exaggerate. Very potent, easy to work with and relatively common crystals. Extremely useful for those who have a desire to develop their psychic faculties.
Crystal Clusters
Crystal clusters cleanse the environment, can offer protection, purification and are also used to cleanse and energize other crystals. Try them as room stones to energize your environment.
Clusters or Family Groups are groups of crystals that share the same base. They make ideal room pieces as they have a strong, harmonious aura.
Crystal Pyramid
Quartz Crystal will take on facets of the geometry of the shape it has been formed into. For example, a pyramid made of quartz will emit a highly focused spiral beam of energy. Used mainly with healing.
Devic Crystal
Fractures and inclusions within the shaft of the crystal which sometimes look like a devic being. Wonderful for earth healing and promoting universal love they also open our hearts to the beauties of nature.
Devic crystals are usually very clear but have misted surfaces. It is said that faeries love these crystals and are attracted to them. If your intention is to work with the Faery Realm, remember one important rule – never break a promise made in that magical, sacred land!
Double Terminated Crystal
A crystal that is has natural terminations on both ends of the shaft. Thus they are able to direct energy from both ends and therefore make excellent linking crystals. Also a very powerful tool when dealing with negative energies and an excellent all round balancing and healing tool.
When a crystal has amethyst as well as clear quartz it also enhances lucid dreaming and aids intuition.
Dow Crystal
Recognized by 3 seven sided faces separated on each side by a triangular face. They combine the qualities of the transmitter and channeler crystal. It is the crystal for creativity and service to humanity through both spiritual and mystical pursuits.
The Dow Crystal is named after the person who recognized it's metaphysical properties - Jane Ann Dow.
Drusy Crystal
These are tiny crystals that have either formed over another crystal or on matrix. A prime example is Spirit Quartz, Fairy and Cactus Quartz. A joyous healing energy. Try Drusy for energizing your aura and promoting creativity.
Elestial Crystal
An Elestial crystal has numerous natural terminations occurring along the main point. Elestials are considered to assist in the mass cleansing, healing and reawakening that is occurring in these times. Bringers of strength, they can assist in overcoming emotional burdens and bring body and spirit into synchronicity whilst connecting us with the Angelic realms.
For those who wish it Elestials can provide information that enables us to move forward or overcome blockages in our spiritual path and align us with the wisdom of the universe. They bring into the now the elusive, intuitive thoughts we chase about past, present and future accelerating our path towards the light. They occur in many types of crystals. The example here is a red hematite included quartz. Elestials form in an unusual and specific way and can bring out deep and hidden depths within you.
Enhydro Crystal
Enhydro crystals contain fluid, most often water although some very rare cases plant oil. A bubble of gas moves through the water. Enhydros really resonate with me. Contained within each enhydro crystal is water that has remained unchanged and pure for eons. As such I have always associated enhydros with cleansing and purification, be it emotional, spiritual or mundane. Water is also a great element for dream or meditation work It is the element of feeling and as such helps me intuit the information I am receiving correctly. In cases where the bubbles move in these earth treasures they also teach us to flow easily through our troubles much as the bubbles freely flow in the pockets of water. I have also found them very helpful in healing and divination work.
Generator Crystal (also called Merlin Crystals)
Generator crystals, have 6 equal sides and 6 faces that meet together at a centrally located point. They can be used to positively charge and energize both your own bodies and the environment. They are excellent for stimulating your chakras and directing energy precisely which explains why most healing wands are cut in this formation.
Grounding Crystal
These crystals have an eight sided face and are relatively rare. As the name implies they assist in the management of matters of this plane in a practical manner.
They will also assist in gaining clarity and expressing ones self in day to day situations.
Growth Interference (Spirit or Fairy Crystals)
The growth interference quartz crystal has been used to bring access to the astral, ethereal and higher planes, in order that one may remove barriers and may understand the patience of step-wise progression. It can assist in proceeding through traumas and changes with ease – promoting understanding.”
At one time this formation defined only those crystals that were marked with the indentations of now dissolved calcite. However now includes other types of growth interference, perhaps resulting from other quartz crystals or matrix. In either case, a crystal has been subjected to a drastic change of shape but still develops to completion. This is they key signature of these crystals and makes them useful in overcoming obstacles, both as a frequency and as a meditation.
"In growth interference quartz the energies of calcite are combined with quartz to bring a powerful healing and progressing energy to ones life. Although the calcite does not normally remain with the crystal, the energy seems to be inculcated and remains to assist in energy.
Isis Crystal
An Isis Crystal has a large 5 sided face. This crystal has the ability to put you in touch with your feminine energy and bring about balance. They assist with being in the here and now.
Japanese Law Crystal
Penetration twins are called Japanese Law crystals. Twinned quartz crystals are very common, as you can see examples of them in all quartz clusters.
Key Crystal
Key crystals are recognized by an indentation on the side or face of a crystal, usually six sided. They are used to gain access to information from which you are normally excluded. Healing concepts and illusive aspects of ourselves can be unlocked.
"Used to unlock the "doors" to healing concepts and those aspects of the self which tend to be illusive. It also assists one in accessing that which is hidden in any situation. One can place the crystal on letters, photographs, etc., in order to gain admittance to concealed or obscure messages which are inherent."
Very useful for healers and intuitive diagnostics.
Manifestation Crystal
These are of two types of the prized, beautiful and mysterious Manifestation formation. One is where a crystal that previously bridged into a larger one, has become enclosed. The other where a DT literally grew within a larger crystal. The latter are seriously rare and the choice of the purist. Both are extremely beautiful with unique energies.
From a geometric point of view, they represent a "world within a world". They are used by mystics to help manifest desires on the physical plane.

Phantom Crystals
The phantom quartz crystal is a crystal with a smaller crystal(s) inside it that are often faint but quite distinct. These phantom crystals are the evidence of a series of developments in the crystal’s history. Normally, you cannot see them in a crystal, but in phantom crystals, an impurity that covers the crystal makes these stages of its evolution appear distinct. These impurities are commonly chlorite, caledonite, or carnelian.Phantom quartz crystals are used for past life recall and meditation. They are excellent as personal crystals.

Red Phantom:
Red phantom quartz crystals additionally contain the properties of limonite, kaolinite and hematite. These crystals are rare. White Phantom: These phantoms often appear as gorgeous, translucent veils - a kind of holographic pyramid. As well as the general properties of the phantom, these posses an ability to instil a sense of wonder in the world around us. Helping us see old situations with new eyes. A wonderful crystal for the mystic and "seer".
Black Phantom: "Black Phantom Quartz Crystals are very unusual. Rainbow Crystal
Rainbow Crystals display the colours of the rainbow within their depths, this phenomenon being caused by water or flaws within the stone. They make good friends and can help to protect us, and to remind us that life can be beautiful.
Record Keeper Crystal
Recognized by a slightly raised triangle or triangles on the side or face of the quartz crystal. Sometimes the triangles are fairly deep and "3D", though often they are almost flat to the crystal face. These rare formations are said to possess information from bygone cultures, specifically Atlantis.

Rutilated Quartz Crystal

Self Healing Crystal
Recognized by crystalline structures appearing where a crystal was previously broken.
Having learned to heal itself, these crystals can reveal this knowledge to someone in the process of healing themselves or others. Crystals in general and self-healed quartz in particular are insistent on trying to teach us that nothing is ever too late, or too damaged to reach the state of inherent perfection. Very useful and potent crystals.

Smokey Quartz Crystal
The presence of sodium in clear quartz creates smokey quartz.
Most of the quartz sold as Smokey is irradiated and vastly inferior energetically, at best. It can usually be identified by its unnaturally dark colour.
While clear quartz (especially that with rainbows) is used on all chakras, the smokey variety, as with all dark/blackish stones is generally associated with the base chakra. It is therefore useful in removing blockages to physical energy in relation to fear and it's foundations.
This can often be earlier negative experiences. If these are of a sexual nature, treatment of the base chakra is doubly indicated. However, the varied combinations that smokey's are available in, from elestials to enhydros, must also be considered in determining its effects.
This crystal is useful in helping dissolve negative energy produced by the mind. Balancing and cleansing of the meridians and subtle bodies is enhanced.
The energy of smokey quartz is receptive and it is a mood elevator. It is said to overcome depression and other negative emotions. It is said to dissolve energy fields which have been generated from negative thought forms, anger and resentment. It is prolonged, intense and gentle in its action on the higher levels such as meditation, simply holding the stone will suffice. Provides for balancing the yin-yang energy. The presence of sodium in clear quartz is said to produce smokey quartz; therefore, according to Melody (Love is in the Earth), smokey quartz can facilitate the regulation of liquids within the body, and can produce a state of equilibrium within the body with respect to mineral supplementation.
When there is a distinct delineation between clear and smokey, "the combination of smokey/clear quartz with a very definite separation", "has produced a melding of the properties of smokey and clear quartz. It has also been used to assist one in matters of discrimination and in delineation of those actions required in ones life to facilitate the furtherance of objectives in any situation. Tabular or “Tabby” Quartz Crystal
Tabular or “Tabby” Quartz Crystals grow in a flattened form and are truly excellent for dealing with severe emotional trauma, shock, panic or despair.
Twin Crystal
Twin quartz crystals are easily recognized as two or more crystals growing together both in parallel or opposing alignments to each other.
Twin quartz crystals are useful for helping build friendships (on all levels) and helping soul mates meet each other.
By soul mates, do not necessarily think this just applies for romantic soul mates, but people who have a shared purpose in this lifetime for whatever reason, can also be called soul mates.
